This entry is continuing our 10-part series, Tackling Project Manager Challenges, outlining the top 10 challenges for Project Managers and how iRise can help.

It can be an incredibly beneficial thing when your company can outsource work. It allows you to refocus on important business activities without sacrificing the quality of your work, allow you to perform tasks at a reasonable cost, and reduce your overhead.  Outsourcing, however, can also be a project manager’s greatest nightmare especially when it involves working with global resources. How is one supposed to effectively communicate complex requirements and specifications when they’re working with someone who is a continent away?

A few years back, BP made a decision to outsource all application development and all application maintenance. They called the program ADAM and in the context of that decision to outsource, they recognized that they needed a next generation way to communicate requirements for complex, custom, and SAP applications with their global sourcing partners like IBM, Accenture, and Mphasis. After piloting iRise successfully in their upstream, downstream, trading, and SAP lines of business, they were able to measure during those pilots a 30% impact on time to market, and made a global standardization decision. During the first year of the enterprise roll out, BP successfully used iRise on 40 projects in their upstream business and saw an impact on cost, ranging from 15% to 65%  (an average of 30%).  BP reported that they achieved this ROI on their entire enterprise investment in year one, which is what every CIO hopes for when they introduce new processes and software platforms.

Visualization is an incredible tool for communicating across boundaries and is a great tool for collaborating with outsourced resources.  “We were able to be forward-thinking…we were able to immediately start designing and creating specifications. We would not have been able to talk at all without the visualization,” said a BP project manager.
